Babies Learning to Walk: 3 Stages & How to Help

TCE Baby10 July 2024178

After your baby starts crawling, you might wonder when they will start walking. Most babies can stand between 9 to 12 months. Some might need support, while others can stand alone. Once they can stand well, they will start walking soon.

Stages of Learning to Walk

1. Cruising (9 months)

After standing up, your baby will move around by holding onto furniture. Tables and cabinets are good for practicing walking.

2. First Steps (10-12 months)

One day, your baby might take a step towards you while holding onto the sofa. After some hesitation, they will take their first shaky steps into your arms. This gives them balance and confidence.

3. Independent Walking (After 12 months)

Around one year old, your baby might walk without help, though unsteadily. If they still prefer crawling or holding onto furniture, they might need more time. It's normal for babies to start walking between 12 to 17 months. If your baby isn’t walking by 18 months or walks unsteadily after 2 years old, see a doctor.

Tips for Helping Your Baby Walk

You don’t need to teach your baby to walk. Just provide a safe environment and let them practice.

- Avoid Walkers

Do not use walkers that enclose your baby. Health experts advise against them. Walkers are unsafe and prevent babies from learning to balance on their own.

- Barefoot is Best

Walking barefoot helps your baby feel the ground and learn to grip it with their feet. Let them practice barefoot if the ground is clean and safe. Use shoes or socks if the surface is dirty, uneven, cold, or if they are outside.

- Limit Holding Hands

Babies need to learn to balance alone. Holding their hands too much can delay this. Ensure safety, but let them explore and practice on their own. Let them use sofas, walls, or push toys for support. Encourage them to get up on their own after a fall, unless they are hurt, to build confidence and reduce fear of falling.

These tips will help your baby gain the skills and confidence needed to walk on their own.
